BONDED JOINTS EXPOSED TO WATER AND MOISTURE
Waterproof double-sided tape: choose for your application
Choose waterproof double-sided tape based on the actual moisture exposure and both parts being joined. A tape's resistance alone does not make the complete joint watertight. Krückemeyer GmbH helps you select a product and a suitable converted format.

Selection criteria
What water exposure must the joint withstand?
Distinguish between occasional moisture, repeated contact with water and prolonged exposure. Check both surfaces, the tape construction, bonding area, edges and the load during use. A moisture-resistant product does not remove the need to assess the complete joint.

WATER EXPOSURE AND JOINT DESIGN
Assess tape resistance and joint sealing separately
According to their manufacturers, some acrylic foam and foam tapes resist water or moisture; with suitable joint design, a closed-cell acrylic foam core can also provide a seal. Whether the finished joint stays watertight also depends on the substrate, contact area, edges, application and duration of exposure. Clarify whether the joint faces moisture, splashing water or another type of water contact, and what load acts at the same time.
For cut lengths or die-cut parts, we coordinate material, shape and delivery format with your assembly process. Describe both parts, the water exposure and your intended application in the enquiry form so that the suitability of a specific format can be assessed.

QUESTIONS ABOUT WATER-EXPOSED JOINTS
When is double-sided tape suitable for contact with water?
It is suitable when the properties of the specific tape and the design of the joint match the expected water exposure. Even if a manufacturer describes a tape as water- or moisture-resistant, it is not automatically suitable for every joint. Specify both surfaces, the type and duration of contact, the load and the planned construction. These details allow the material and application method to be assessed.
Is a moisture-resistant tape automatically watertight?
No. Moisture resistance is a material property; the finished joint must be assessed for sealing. The manufacturer datasheet for tesa ACXplus 7805 describes a closed-cell acrylic foam core that seals against water. Whether it does so in your application also depends on the contact surfaces, edges, substrate and application. Watertightness therefore cannot be promised for every double-sided tape.
How do substrate and application pressure matter in damp conditions?
Both affect whether the tape bonds the parts as intended. Selecting a tape for an application requires a review of the surfaces, cleaning and pretreatment, as well as application pressure, bonding area and direction of the load. Damp or contaminated surfaces can impair adhesion in practice even if the product datasheet states moisture resistance. Describe the condition of both parts and your application step before specifying a tape.
What information is needed for converted waterproof tapes?
Provide the material and surface of both parts, the type and duration of water contact, the load, and the required shape and delivery format. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut suitable materials to size or convert them into die-cut parts for an application. Conversion does not automatically change the material's properties. The suitability of a cut length or die-cut part for the complete joint depends on its geometry, material and assembly method.
