Select acrylic tape by construction and substrate
Start with both bonding surfaces: material, coating and surface energy affect adhesion. Then consider thickness, construction and the direction and duration of the load. An acrylic foam core can conform to surfaces and absorb stress between unlike parts; suitability always depends on the specific tape and application.

Choosing acrylic adhesive tape
Distinguish acrylic adhesive from acrylic foam
Acrylic identifies the adhesive chemistry; acrylic foam describes one possible tape core. In 3M Acrylic Foam 5361, the core is acrylic foam and one side has an additional acrylic adhesive layer. Do not treat every tape with acrylic adhesive as acrylic foam. To narrow down the choice, specify both substrates, the required bond, load direction and service conditions. Krückemeyer GmbH can assess suitable variants and convert an appropriate tape into cut widths or die-cut parts for your process.

What does acrylic mean in double-sided adhesive tape?
Acrylic identifies the adhesive chemistry, not necessarily the entire tape construction. A tape may also have a carrier or an acrylic foam core. In 3M Acrylic Foam 5361, an acrylic foam core has an additional acrylic adhesive layer on one side. Selection therefore depends on which layer bonds to each substrate and how the complete construction behaves under the intended load.
How does acrylic foam differ from a tape with acrylic adhesive?
Acrylic foam forms a viscoelastic tape core; acrylic adhesive is an adhesive layer. In 3M Acrylic Foam 5361, one side of the foam core has an additional acrylic adhesive layer. The core can absorb stress in the bond line and conform to the bonding surfaces. This is not a general property of every acrylic adhesive tape. Compare the actual construction, substrates and required load for your application.
Which substrates suit acrylic adhesive tape?
That depends on the adhesive formulation and the two actual bonding surfaces. For 3M Acrylic Foam 5361, many automotive paints and certain medium-surface-energy substrates may be suitable; this does not mean the tape suits every plastic. Tell us the material, coating and surface condition of each part. On demanding substrates, assess suitability and any surface preparation on the actual component.
What information is needed for a converted tape format?
Start with the intended result and both bonding surfaces. For converting, also specify the required tape width or shape, delivery format and application step. Whether the selected acrylic adhesive tape will support the bond under your service conditions needs to be assessed for the material and application.
