Selection criteria

Which side of the bond must be released later?

Before choosing a product, identify both parts and their surfaces. A removable adhesive side may be combined with a permanently bonding side. The required hold time, load in use and removal conditions matter as well. Foam tapes and film-backed tapes differ in construction and handling; assess suitability for the specific product.

REMOVABLE TAPE RANGE

Removable double-sided tapes in the range

The filterable range contains double-sided tapes assigned the product property “removable”. For selection by brand, see tesa removable double-sided tapes and 3M removable double-sided tapes; the individual product details determine suitability.

SELECTION AND REMOVAL

Assess holding power and later removal together

“Removable” concerns separating the bond later; “repositionable” concerns adjusting it during application. Reuse after removal is a separate property that depends on the product and substrate. For 3M 9415PC, one side has a low-tack removable adhesive and the other bonds permanently; reuse may be possible depending on the smooth substrate. For tesa 65610 Removable, residue-free removal applies to the side originally covered by the release liner. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dust, oil and dirt; remaining foam residue is pulled away slowly and evenly with the reinforcement film.

For changing promotional or presentation materials and temporary fixing of components, we assess product information, the surface, service period and removal method. Krückemeyer GmbH can convert suitable tapes into cut rolls or die-cut parts; the shape, material and removal function need to be assessed together. Describe both joined parts and the intended separation in the consultation form.

QUESTIONS ABOUT REMOVAL

What does “removable” mean for double-sided tape?

It means that the adhesive bond can be separated again under the conditions specified for the individual product. It does not mean that both adhesive sides release in the same way or that every substrate will be free of residue. With double-sided tape that has differently bonding sides, decide before application which side should remain on the component and which should be released later. Check the tape construction, both joined parts and the planned time of removal.

How do removable, repositionable and reusable differ?

Removable describes separation of a bond later. Repositionable means that the adhesive side designed for it can be adjusted again during application. Reusable goes further: the same adhesive side can be used again after removal. That is supported only for products designed for this purpose and suitable substrates. For 3M 9415PC, the low-tack side is repositionable and may be reused depending on the smooth substrate; the opposite side bonds permanently.

When can removable tape be taken off without residue?

Only when the particular product and application allow this under suitable conditions. For tesa 65610 Removable, the documented residue-free removal applies to the side covered by the release liner; the other side must not be treated as equivalent. Before bonding, surfaces must be dry and free of dust, oil and dirt. During removal, any remaining foam is pulled away slowly and evenly using the PET reinforcement film. Test sensitive surfaces and the actual service period on your component beforehand.

What details help with tape selection and converting?

Describe both joined parts and surfaces, the required hold time, the load during use and how the bond is to be released later. For a converted format, add the roll width, length or required shape and explain your application steps. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut tapes and make die-cut parts. Whether the selected removable double-sided tape retains its intended function is assessed against the material, geometry and application.
