TRANSPARENT BONDS WITH 3M
3M transparent double-sided tape
For visible bond lines and transparent parts, 3M offers different double-sided tapes. Carrier, thickness and adhesive determine how the bond looks and adheres to your surfaces. Choose the tape to suit the components, load and application process.

Selection criteria
What needs to remain visible at the bond line?
First decide whether you need an unobtrusive fixing or an optically clear bond through transparent parts. Transparent 3M tapes differ in film carrier, adhesive system and thickness. Compare both components and their surfaces, the available bonding area, and any edges or transitions in view. The subsequent load and the way the tape is applied also matter.

CHOOSING FOR VISIBLE BOND LINES
Assess appearance, adhesion and application together
“Transparent” initially describes the colour of the tape. For a backlit bond, the optical properties of the specific product must also be suitable. A thin polyester carrier can aid handling and dimensional stability; another construction may be more suitable for uneven surfaces. Assess the surfaces of both components, the desired bond-line thickness and the load before choosing a tape.
Uneven bond lines and air pockets stand out along visible edges. Clean, dry surfaces and continuous pressure during application help avoid trapped air; the instructions for the selected product remain decisive. Krückemeyer GmbH can convert suitable tapes into dimensions and shapes matched to the application. Tell us about your component, surface, geometry and desired appearance so we can assess the selection and conversion.

QUESTIONS ABOUT TRANSPARENT BONDS
When is “transparent” enough for a visible bond?
On its own, it is not enough. For 3M double-sided tape, “transparent” initially describes the colour; an optically demanding or backlit bond also requires checking the light transmission and haze of the specific product. Tape thickness, carrier, adhesive, components and visible edges also affect the appearance. Decide whether the bond line simply needs to be unobtrusive or should appear as clear as possible through transparent parts. A suitable option can then be selected from its product data and tested on the actual component.
How do transparent 3M tapes with film carriers differ?
They differ, among other things, in tape thickness and adhesive system. In tapes designed for it, a transparent polyester carrier helps with handling and dimensional stability; adhesion also depends on the adhesive and the surface. The 3M range contains options for different substrates, including certain low surface energy plastics. That does not mean every plastic or visible bond is suitable. Compare the technical details of the specific item with both components, the available bonding area and the load.
How can air pockets be avoided during application?
Apply the tape from one end and press it down continuously towards the other. The components must be clean, dry and free from substances that impair adhesion. Even pressure helps the tape contact the surface and reduces the risk of visible trapped air. Check the product information for the temperature, pressure and preparation required by the selected 3M double-sided tape. Inspect the result on your actual component, especially when the bond line is in view.
What information helps with an enquiry about transparent cut parts?
Describe both components and their surfaces, the size and shape of the bonding area, and the desired tape thickness and visibility of the bond line. Include the load, service environment and how the tape will be applied in your process. For conversion, details of roll width, outline and required supply format are helpful. Krückemeyer GmbH can then assess which transparent 3M double-sided tape may be suitable and whether a cut roll or die-cut part fits your process. Optical and technical suitability must be assessed for the specific product and component.
