Select extra strong 3M double-sided tape

Start with the parts, their surfaces and the loads on the finished joint. The range contains different 3M tapes; “extra strong” does not describe one construction or a fixed load capacity. Check the adhesive, carrier, thickness and intended substrates in the individual product information. Also specify the bond area, load direction, temperature and application process. Only then can you assess which variant may suit your assembly task.

Acrylic foam can conform to surfaces and absorb stress within a bonded joint. That may matter when joining different materials or dealing with slight unevenness. The construction alone does not make every 3M VHB tape suitable for every substrate or load. The particular product family, surface, bond area and service conditions determine the choice. Compare the information for the individual product with your parts and intended use.

It may be possible with a suitable design and a verified load case. A bonded area distributes forces differently from a point fastener, so the two methods cannot be treated as universally interchangeable. The materials, surface preparation, geometry, load direction, service environment and required life all matter.
