Assess temperature, duration and load together

First establish whether heat affects the part only during a process step or throughout its service life. Check the bonding temperature, both substrate surfaces and the direction of force as well. A temperature rating for the tape alone does not establish how much load the finished bond can bear when hot.

CHOOSING 3M TAPE FOR HEAT

What a temperature rating means for your bond

3M distinguishes between continuous and short-term temperature resistance for VHB variants 4611, 4646 and 4655. For this product family, its data sheet specifies 150 °C continuously and 230 °C for short periods. These figures are not a blanket approval for every bond: the adhesive's load-bearing capacity decreases at higher temperatures. Suitable metal parts may be bonded before powder coating, but cleavage loads must be avoided during the curing cycle and preliminary tests are necessary. The bonded parts should have similar coefficients of thermal expansion.

To help select a tape, we need the temperature profile, including duration and peaks, both substrates, the bonding area and the load during processing and service. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut a suitable tape to size or supply die-cut parts. We will agree the geometry and specific material with you before you test the bond in your process.

3M TAPE UNDER HEAT

What does heat-resistant mean for 3M double-sided tape?

It describes a temperature-related property of the specific product, not a general approval for the finished bond. For VHB variants 4611, 4646 and 4655, 3M gives separate ratings for continuous and short-term heat exposure. Whether the tape will hold in your application also depends on the substrates, surface preparation, bonding area, exposure time and load during heating. Check the product data and test the bond on the actual parts.

How do continuous and short-term temperature loads differ?

Continuous exposure lasts throughout service, while a short-term peak occurs only during a limited process step. A 3M data sheet specifies 150 °C continuously and 230 °C for short periods for VHB variants 4611, 4646 and 4655. Those ratings apply to the named product family and do not replace testing of the actual bond. The adhesive's load-bearing capacity decreases at higher temperatures, so both the load and its direction during heating matter.

Can a 3M VHB tape be bonded before powder coating?

For the 3M VHB family 4611, 4646 and 4655, the manufacturer describes bonding suitable metal parts before powder coating. Cleavage loads must be avoided during the curing cycle because adhesive strength decreases at high temperatures. Thermal expansion of the bonded parts matters too; their coefficients of expansion should be similar. Share the temperature profile and part geometry, then run preliminary tests on the actual bond.

What information does Krückemeyer need for cutting or die-cut parts?

We need the intended performance of the bond, both substrates and surfaces, the temperature profile, exposure time and load. Add the available bonding area, direction of force, required roll width or die-cut shape, and your processing steps. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut suitable tapes to size and produce die-cut parts. We assess whether the material, geometry and supplied format suit your application using the product data and your parts.
