Selection criteria

Define the joining parts, area and load direction first

Record the materials and condition of both surfaces and the bond area actually available. A load parallel to the area creates shear; a perpendicular load creates tension. Peel or cleavage forces concentrated at an edge need separate assessment. Selection also depends on temperature and moisture during application and use, as well as the geometry of the parts.

3M MOUNTING TAPE SELECTION GUIDE

Assess the complete joint

Tape alone does not determine load capacity: surface contact, bond area, application pressure and load direction act together. The joining parts themselves must be sufficiently strong; critical surfaces and peel or cleavage loads require application-specific assessment. Krückemeyer GmbH can combine material selection with cut-to-size tape or die-cut parts for your geometry. Describe the parts, load case and application process in the enquiry form.

QUESTIONS ABOUT 3M MOUNTING

What information is needed to select a 3M mounting tape?

We need to know both joining parts and their surfaces, the available bond area and the direction of the load. Please add whether the joint will encounter temperature or moisture during application or use. Part geometry, the pressure that can be applied and the required supply format also matter. Only then can a product in the range be assessed for your mounting task; the completed joint must be checked for the specific application.

Why is a stated adhesion value insufficient for joint design?

A single adhesion value does not fully describe the load on your completed joint. With 3M mounting tape, the surfaces of both parts, effective bond area, contact achieved through pressure and load direction also matter. Shear and tensile loads are distributed differently from peel and cleavage loads, which concentrate force at an edge. Compare product data in the context of your part geometry and conditions of use, rather than treating one value as a load rating.

How do shear, tensile and peel loads differ?

Shear forces act parallel to the bond area, while tensile forces act perpendicular to it. Under peel, force acts at the edge; under cleavage, it concentrates along a line between rigid joining parts. Only a small part of the bond area then carries the load. Such load cases should be avoided by the joint design or assessed separately with a specialist before use. State the load direction and shape of both parts when you enquire.

What matters when applying 3M mounting tape?

Surfaces must be dry and free of dust, oil, release agents and other contamination. A suitable residue-free cleaner must not damage the material. Once positioned, the tape needs pressure appropriate to the part geometry so the adhesive contacts the whole intended area. Depending on the adhesive system, final bond strength develops only after a dwell period. The relevant product data sheet and a test on your actual parts determine the specific application process.

Which supply format suits a 3M mounting tape?

The supply format depends on part geometry and processing. Cut-to-size tape can suit a defined width; die-cut parts can suit a recurring contour. Krückemeyer GmbH combines material selection with converting: processing suitable material into application-specific dimensions, shapes and supply formats. Describe the required shape and how you apply the tape. We can then assess which suitable starting material can be processed for your application.
