Which foam carrier suits the bond?
This range includes 3M double-sided tapes with different foam carriers. The 4026 and 4032 urethane foam tapes offer high shear strength for indoor assembly. The 9546 polyethylene foam tape offers high initial adhesion, including on difficult surfaces such as polypropylene. For your parts, also compare the required thickness, bonded area, direction of force and service environment. Suitability depends on the specific product and the complete bond.

Assess thickness, tolerances and load together
A foam carrier fills gaps on irregular surfaces and can distribute load across the bonded area. The actual joint guides the selection: how even are the parts, how large is the bonded area and in which direction does the force act? 3M 4032 is 0.8 mm thick; 3M 4026 is 1.6 mm thick. Greater thickness, however, does not by itself mean a higher load capacity. Check the construction and the data for the individual product in your application.

QUESTIONS ABOUT 3M FOAM TAPE
How do 3M urethane and polyethylene foam tapes differ?
The foam carriers and their uses differ. The 4026 and 4032 urethane foam tapes offer high shear strength for indoor assembly. The 9546 polyethylene foam tape has a closed-cell construction and high initial adhesion on a range of surfaces, including polypropylene. This does not establish a general ranking for every joint. Compare each product's data with both parts, the direction of force and the service environment. What matters is whether the particular tape suits the complete bonded assembly.
Why does the thickness of 3M foam tape matter?
Thickness affects how a foam carrier can accommodate a gap between the parts. 3M 4032 is 0.8 mm thick; 3M 4026 is 1.6 mm thick. These values describe particular versions and do not replace an assessment of the joint or bonded area. Record the unevenness and tolerances of both parts and the loads in service. A thicker tape is not automatically the right choice: the adhesive, surfaces and processing conditions must also suit the application.
Is every 3M foam tape a VHB tape?
No. The 3M 4026 and 4032 urethane foam tapes and the 9546 polyethylene foam tape belong to the double-sided foam tape range. 3M presents VHB tapes as a different product family. A foam carrier should therefore not be classified as VHB on the basis of thickness alone. Compare the construction, adhesive and intended surfaces of the individual product. Where high loads or special environmental conditions are involved, assess the complete joint in its actual application.
What information is needed for cut rolls or die-cut parts?
Tell us about both parts and their surfaces, the joint and its tolerances, the bonded area and the load in service. Add the required shape and delivery form, along with the steps in which the tape will be processed. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut suitable tapes to size and produce die-cut parts. The selected starting material must suit the geometry and application. Cutting or die-cutting changes the tape's shape; whether the bond holds still depends on the selected tape and its application. These details allow the technical choice and feasibility of the requested form to be assessed.
